Yes on this particular machine an extra para port is possible, but I will not
gain the ability to count the encoders I have as fast or as reliable as I would
like. Finding how fast the audrino can count would be cool, as that would make
for a very low cost expansion running off serial port.

Like I said I am working on /planning 3 machines.

The harbor freight 8x14 lathe is sitting on bench with a baldor 3 phases motor
and an allen bradley VFD on the spindle. It has been like this for a
while.(year) I have rudementry counter encoder and index pulse generator on it.

The seacond is a harbor freight 4x5 mini micro lathe. This has the dc spindle
motor. I thought I had the right pulleys to get the z axis set up but one of
them is not going to work. I also had a AMC servo drive I would of liked to
have used on the spindle but it was a can only interface, but it has nice fets
in it for salvageing.

By not learning in this case I was actually referring to learning about the h
bridge and driving it, specifically, but also in general about fpga and such. I
am not a great inovator as much as an awsome immitator. so as such I am adding
alot of bits I'v seen from other projects.

The milling machine (you guessed it harbor freight) has been semi enclosed and
still fully manual.

I see a long road ahead, but the journey should be grand, if the destination a
little anti-climatic.

Hi Jon. Welcome to the project.

You can learn a lot with just a few IO. HAL and ClassicLadder will
allow you to connect those in creative ways. One of my early
experiments was pulling a relay to make coffee in the morning.

If your computer permits, an extra parport card can expand your project
quite a bit. You sound like you should be able to build IO interface
circuits pretty easily.
