I've looked at a timing [type] belt and I now believe that it is problably a better option than my rack and pinion, however I've never been able to get accurate details on belt stretch and therefore don't know how accurate the assembly would be. In most instances it would probably work fairly well, however my machine is of a pretty large scale in length as well as weight [Gantry weigh's over 1 ton]. I've looked at [and used in past design projects] Eagle PD belts and they are very impressive.. however they claim 'nill' belt stretch.. yet I know it does [stretch] from past experiance [although it was VERY little, there is no way of knowing how much it will stretch w/ 2700lbs pulling and 240" of belt].. this unknown has led me away from belts. I use precision planetary reducers for all my reducers and have enjoyed their precision thus far. That coupled w/ the rack/pinion has made a reasonably accurate machine.. I'm expecting the ballscrew to just push that limit up again 'that' much more. :)
