Oh yes. The work piece blanks start out at about 550 lbs. There is a gantry and chainfall over the lathe to handle the parts.
Everything is way to heavy to handle without assistance. The largest lathe I have seen first hand is in Evansville, IN at a motor rewind shop. This 3 foot swing lathe looks like a baby lathe compared to it. The swing is over 6 feet and the distance between centers is something like 30+ feet long. Crazy big. They use it to turn really large motor and generator armatures. Everything is huge. I'm sure that there are even bigger ones out there though that do big gear blanks and long ship prop shafts etc. There are some videos of similar sized lathes on Youtube.
