With the index on a rotary encoder, you get an index pulse every 0.2".  
As long as the
home switch can get you close enough so you always sense the final home 
position
on the same one of these pulses, then it is fine.  Having several home 
markers allows
the machine builder to decide whether he wants home at the left, middle 
or right of the
axis travel, for instance.  As long as the homing sequence is designed 
so it always
picks up the same index pulse, you are OK.
