Does it have a switchable output, like inches in one mode, and mm in the other? My most dependable digital caliper has such a feature. Maybe it would correspond to every inch, centimeter, or even some arbitrary amount? About all you can do in that case is watch the counts coming out, and see if its always present at count=x or something like that. It seems to me there has to be some sort of a marker, and its up to the observer to figure out what the pulse really represents.
