I removed splash and quiet from the grub commandline and apart from these, I
tried:

acpi=off
pci=assign-busses
all-generic-ide

and in combinations, but none change anything. It is more vodeo related i
believe, So I used also:

vga=normal
nosplash
vga=771 / 773 / 0x0315 ...
video=vesafb:mode_options=1024x76...@60 / 800x60...@60 /
640x480-8/16/2...@60/75 ...
video=uvesafb:mode_options=1024x76...@60

nothing chaged. I can reed until
"... checking initramfs ... it is"

and then the screen get's a white stripe on the lcd panel and then whitens out
completely

Actually, I put the standard emc2 8.04 live cd i again and due to a call let it
run without any modifications. I have a secon monitor attached to the analogue
port. that showed the familiar brown colour and then the grey menubar on top.
Howver nothing is really readable. it is intersected. If I move the mouse, a
pattern moves correspondingly. I conclude: som X-server started up somehow but
the config is wrong. With the screen garbled, I cannot use the gui to set it,
so ctrl alt F1 for textmode console, but there the panel stays as is and the
external monitor blacks. Back to gui (ctrl alt F7) and the same garbled brown
colour with grey menubar (garbled and mouse pattern moving reapears.

will now try to login via ssh and probably use a much better external monitor.
Meanwhile, I would really apprieciate any hint, my feeling is I am close to a
solution.

besides: there was a bug in the chips f69000 driver that has been solved
somewhere around kernel 2.6.24. Maybe I should remaster the live cd and bring
that module there?

greets
chris
