You might try doing a Stock Ubuntu install.  Stuart Stevenson mentioned in
one email string that is his preffered install method since "stock Ubuntu"
has much better driver support to get peripherals up and running.  Once the
computer works fine, then use the "Stock Install" method noted on the wiki.
