I am not sure that is "classical" backlash, and might not be as
difficult to deal with.

It really seems to me that using a PID with only FF0 and I terms (with
a limit on I of say 0.01") ought to be worth a try. Effectively that
should pass the position command straight through to the stepgen just
like a classic step machine, but on heavy cuts the I should be able to
wind the spring out of the system and keep the table in position.
