I'm encouraged that you're making progress since I'm about to embark on a similar venture with Nano-X and my Infocast. You need to direct at least some of your frustration toward the x.org folks. Ubuntu, like many other Linux distributions, mostly just packages the x.org ouvre, and the distribution maintainers are having their own problems keeping up. I know I have trouble putting out of my mind the now irrelevant details I learned about X back in the day of Unix workstations. I'm a true believer in open-source software, but sometimes I think it's a miracle anything useful has resulted.
