On my HNC lathe, Jon's UPC controller takes care of the home and index
logic, it also has way-fast encoder reading so the index doesn't get
missed. It should be accurate to less than .0025mm (.0001").

On my Shizuoka mill, I line up axis marks, then 0 on the hand wheel
dials. It's probably accurate to .13mm (.0005).

If the homing didn't work I would have ruined parts by now. I just
didn't understand the details, now I have a better understanding of what
I don't know.

I think most people are loose with homing and use touch off to get the
workpiece to a known location. It works, but it's not very elegant. (If
I recall correctly, setting up a functioning home is required to get an
Integrator badge :)
