nanosecond scale light pulses can be had for the focussing of a laser on a
rotating pin hole in a sheet of houshold aluminium foil.  i was just looking
for single pulses, and used just one foil pin hole mounted on a cardboard disk
about 100mm dia on a little dc motor.  cnc with a pin punch instead of a
spinning cutter could certainly generate a circular array of such holes.  tip
for small pin holes:  use many layers of foil, and select from the bottom most
layers.

I need a larger encoder and preferably on glass, but I do have some
Graflex cameras that hold larger film. I also have my father's darkroom
equipment, but getting it all working again could be a whole other time
and money sink.
