Dave,
It's not your bad luck, I had the exact same problem when I tried
installing the 10.04 Live CD a while ago. Tried multiple times installing
from the CD, and each time it failed at a different point in the process.

So I too tried installing from a USB stick, and it worked the first time.
The install proceeded smoothly, as it should.

I think I may have posted my experience to the group back then,
but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, glad you've got it installed! Enjoy.
