American std 'machine screw', size 4, 40 tpi. tap drill is supposed to be a
#43, so its about a blond one smaller than the 3mm, which is closer to our
#6 (I think, I can't do those conversions in my head) I usually up the tap
drill to a .0925" which is the next size up in fractional inch stuff. Taps
don't wind up plugging the hole near as often because they broke. These
folks never heard of aluma-tap for cutting oil either.

We could too a couple decades ago, but the minimum size commonly available
now is 3 foot of 1/4-20. And it isn't at all well made, lots of ripped
edges from dull dies, undersized & galvanized to look purty. Purty ugly
that is. ;-)

Sounds like our Lowes stores. With my worn hip joints, I grab an electric
sit down cart, then run clear to the other end and collect a coffee from
near the contractors checkout.

I would do that if I could buy alu rod, but my scraps are usually just that
and recycled. But I also haven't checked the alu bins for small rod
recently. Plenty of strap and angle in a good size variety, and I use 1/4"
angle for small brackets. Fiberglass rod for electric fencing posts but
I've not had any great luck drilling and tapping that stuff, its hell on
carbide tooling.
