John, I can tell you for sure that the parts end up being much stronger than you might at first guess from being printed hollow. That isn't to say that they are indestructable -- but I was skeptical at first, too. The application you mentioned is actually perfect for 3D printing -- the various one-off'ish bits and bobs that you would rather not spend much time tooling up to make.
