Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. It very cleverly encodes direction in
the pulse train.
(with stop-start cars it is important not to lose crank-synch if the
engine rocks back on a start, so you can fire on the first TDC without
waiting for the index)
So, you get direction and index all on one channel.
