Hi Andy,

Thank you for your prompt response! The Y axis output appears to be coming out 
on drive/motor "Z". All three motors are locked (energised), the Y motor isn't 
moving when it should be, although the Z-axis motor is when it shouldn't (e.g., 
the default "LinuxCNC" engraving program). I'll check again that what I'm 
looking at is the right motor that's plugged into the correct socket. Having 
said that, there is at no time anything that looks like usual Z-axis behaviour 
in the locked-but-dormant motor.

I say that it looks like a lathe config because that's a bit how it's behaving, 
but I realise that that ain't necessarily so. I had a look to see that 
"xenable", "yenable" and "zenable" were where they were supposed to be in their 
respective [AXIS?] sections, and they were. I'm still a rank beginner at all of 
this so mistakes and mis-interpretations on my part are rather too easy to make.
