That could be an applicable thought Steve, but when I was fooling around 
with a non-real time kernel several years ago, it was far more randomized.  
This is quite regular, which is why I suggested if the motor power is 
coming from a switch mode supply, the recirculating current from the motor 
driver could be driving it into a regular protective shutdown.  Some switch 
mode supplies will go totally ape when they suddenly get 2+ amps shove back 
into the output terminal.

That, and that BOB seems, from the description the OP has given so far, has 
a good chance of being a problem child.

Do you have any more of those 8mmx2.5 screws?
