The original keystick was totally command-line, using
ncurses, I think,
for screen updates. You need to check, I doubt that many people
use keystick, so I have no idea how well it works.

You could also look at the Mini interface, which uses a much
less
CPU intensive graphical screen, and I know Mini still
works. It is
used by the Sherline configs.

Also, there is the Touchy interface, which has no 3-D by
default, but
is pretty hard to use without a touch screen, and also needs a
couple buttons and a manual encoder. But, given those
features, it
is a VERY nice interface.

Also, you can just turn off the 3D preview by clicking on
the DRO
tab in Axis. When Axis starts, click DRO first thing, and
it hides
the 3D. If you use the mesa open-gl software rendering
interface,
it really isn't too bad, and will be no problem with the 3D
hidden.
Unless you are using a hardware step or servo interface, you
need
a decent CPU anyway to handle the software step generation task,
which can be a lot more CPU intensive than the graphics. I ran
on a 7xx MHz Pentium III computer for a long time, with mesa
rendering. I think that may have been Ubuntu 6.06. Originally
I had 128 MB of memory, and had to temporarily up the memory
to do the install. Later, another computer was retired, and
I upped
the memory to 256 MB permanently. I just replaced that machine
a couple weeks ago to allow me to use the camview feature to
see a spindle centering camera on the Axis screen. So, now I'm
running 10.04 and LinuxCNC 2.5.
