If you only have a single channel on the encoder then you need to set
"counter-mode" to 1 for the encoder counter. Otherwise the encoder
just counts up 1, down 1, up one, down 1 as there is no B phase.

Yes, that is what you will end up with. Just set the axis limits as 0
to -18 and it will all work fine. You won't be machining in the G53
coordinate system anyway, so you will never notice.
