Quite.  I had my manufacturing class work on this very
project two years in a row.  They made valiant efforts,
but it is *very* difficult.  You can see some videos of
their systems at: http://wallawalla.edu/engr480/videos ,
look at 2007 and 2008.  The most difficult part isn't really
the motions (which are tricky enough), but the wire handling.
Even when we got the wire onto the stator unsnarled, we
usually had some nick or scrape that would render the
stator unusable.  I visited a motor winding machine manufacturer
in Indiana after our two years of effort building our own machines,
and discovered that they custom design the wire guides for every
customer's stator.  That's when I decided to move on to a new
project for my class.
