And imagine how far we would be now if they hadn't cancelled the Apollo program. I've been reading something about the VASIMR motors to reduce the travelling speed and they would be testing the first prototypes sometime near 2013/2014, but I don't know if that happened or not. Reading wikipedia it says that with this motors the duration of a possible trip to Mars would be of 39 days. Pretty impressive.
