I think I am confused because one person appears to be talking about
using XML in place of the INI file and another seems ot be talking
about using XML to keep a database of all the possible INI file
entries, their purpose and valid numerical ranges.

Maybe, though the INI file is really nothing more than a set of
key-value pairs, and I am not convinced that XML adds anything
particularly useful to that. (It isn't really hierachical even)

That isn't the case at all. One of the responders on this thread even
makes a hardware cape for the BBB.

I guess that the BBB falls through the cracks a bit by not being
covered by PnCConf or by Stepconf, but the same is true of Pico
hardware, General Mechatronics, Motenc etc etc.

I have no objection to XML, I have even used it voluntarily.
