I've not measured it but it seems to that microstepping maps ought to be 
calibrated to the individual motors performance so as to achieve a good 
match at one certain amperage, and that there will a miss-match if the 
motor is not being operated at that current. Since thats a variable we 
aren't told about, changing wildly with both the motor and driver, I 
feel it isn't something any of us will ever be able to precisely define. 
IMO, the proper current should be that which operates the motor the 
smoothest/quietest. But I've not experimented all that extensively to 
find the velocity noise null vs current.

I have played with dampers, the old hf mill getting a tripling of its 
maximum speed with the addition of the dampers. That was my first and 
only machine  using sw steppers.  And a sample on one generally isn't a 
very good sample.
