Maybe, but that cable from amazon arrived today. and has been installed, 
and shows up at /dev/ttyUSB0 in dmesg.  And all the settings shown in 
the man page have now been applied at default values.

But while all the hy_vfd "pins" show up in the halmeter menu, everything 
is zero.  So what else do I need besides a simple "loadusr hy_vfd" in my 
hal file? And I assume that I may as well copy this config to a new one 
because a boatload of net statements will need edited, so I'll nuke that 
line in that halfile, then switch configs and start all over as far as 
the spindle stuff is concerned. I am assuming that first will be 
a " -d/dev/ttyUSB0" added to the loadusr command?
