I too have a Beagle with a xylotex cape just sitting there looking for a project.
One option I've thought of, and it might be ideal for that is scrap the hdmi and on board flash to get more I/O. Then connect an SPI 10" screen and the ability to support a key button matrix of up to say 64 buttons and an MPG. As a standalone 4 axis power feed controller with spindle speed/direction support. And the Ethernet support to make it look like say a 7i92 from the Linux perspective with UDP packets for control. With that you can run the mill in a partially automatic mode for manual type operations. Say a MACH type wizard for facing with depth per layer parameters. But, when you want that full CNC operation you plug the PC into the Ethernet connector (or Pi + Monitor/keyboard/mouse) and it's now a full LinuxCNC system. Probably not at the level of the MESA Ethernet units but adds that standalone concept that I'd call a ELS-MILL.
