That sounds suspiciously like the behaviour consistent with a corrupted database. Don't panic. Quit Entourage, hold down the option key and restart Entourage. Keep the Option key held down until you get asked if you want to rebuild the database. Choose the 'typical' rebuild (or is it called 'normal?').
