It was very confusing to me. I just assumed mine was broken and I use the
address book under the tools menu instead. It never occurred to me that it
would work for names that were not giving me the visual feedback.

I'm at home now on my laptop and I have less than 100 names on it.  At work,
where Office has been set up much longer, I've got the typical 7000.  I'm
going to try playing with the contact bar again.

This is a great list. Is there a corresponding list for Word X?  Don't get
me started on my lover/hate relationship with it.
