I've been following these discussions with a good deal
of interest as I've just replaced my trusty 430EZ and
540EZ speedlites with a 550EX and 420EX. I now have
access to FP flash, e-ttl etc via my EOS 55 (Elan IIe)
and EOS 30 (Elan 7e). I've only had a chance to try
them out very recently and haven't had any film back
yet.
However one thing I DO like about the e-ttl pre-flash
is that I have no doubts about whether the flash has
fired or not. I can see it (the pre-flash) in the
viewfinder when I press the shutter, just before the
mirror blackout (as mentioned in one of these
threads). I don't know how the exposure is (yet) but
that is one side-effect of e-ttl that I really do
like.
Previously I used to frame and take the shot with both
eyes open when using flash, just so I could make sure
the flash had fired. I don't about others, but no
matter how often I do it, I find that distracting and
find it more difficult to frame my shot the way I'd
like.
When not using flash I always have one eye closed (no
not the one at the viewfinder!) - I much prefer that.
Now with the pre-flash - I don't have to have both
eyes open - which suits me just fine.
A small point maybe, but I'm already biased towards my
new flashes! Unless of course time shows that the
exposures aren't as good as ttl with the old flashes,
but everything I read here would seem to indicate that
it should be just as good - if not better.
BTW I wasn't using rear curtain synch with the slower
exposures, so I'm hoping the dreaded BEETTL's won't
rear their ugly heads.
Regards
Gary Fisher
