Hi Julian,

I didn't use them on my 30, but I did use the 540EZ on
the 55 (which also supports e-ttl).

A-ttl doesn't work on the 55 (and presumably on the
30) - it reverts to plain old ttl mode. IMO no great
loss there as I was never enamoured of a-ttl on my EOS
5 (sold to fund the 30). A-ttl (with the 540 anyway)
only worked in P mode, and I usually avoided using P
mode in flash work, because of the typically dark
backgrounds. Plain ttl with AV or TV modes worked
just fine 99% of the time.

As to making the 420EX work in plain ttl mode, no I
haven't tried it and looking through the manual, I
can't see any way of doing so. Apart from the
previous methods suggested with the ttl hot shoe
distributor and taping certain contacts another method
of retaining ttl would be to use your existing 1000FN
with the 420EX - being a type B body, you'll get plain
ttl. Not ideal perhaps (especially with a nice new
camera beckoning), but it'd work.

BTW what is it about e-ttl that you're concerned about
- are you planning on using 2nd curtain synch a lot?
Because if that's the case, you can scratch my last
suggestion, because if memory serves me correctly to
1000FN doesn't have it's own 2nd curtain sync
function, and the 420EX doesn't either - it relies on
the body. It may be that you'll need a 550EX and make
use of the e-ttl/ttl custom function.

With the question about A-TTL distance warning being
active, do you mean the distance scale or the exposure
confirmation lamp. I remember the first always
worked, the 2nd I can't truly recall - sorry.

Enjoy the hours of agonising over things like this -
it is after all part of the fun of buying new gear :-)

Regards
Gary
