EOS Who makes a good 100-300 Zoom Lens?

Hi,

I would like a lens in the 100-300 range approximately, to complement a 
28-135 IS Lens on my EOS Elan 7E.

What I read about the 100-300 USM is not very impressive, especially at the 
long end, and I like sharpness, so I would like other recommendations, if 
possible, but not in the L price range, however.
