Well, I (for one) did write that E-TTL is supposed to ignore very bright
reflections... didn't quite remember where I saw that, but I remember
seeing it little after EOS 50e (i.e. E-TTL) was introduced. But as you
guys always require official Canon sourse, I did breefly browse through my
literature. Here are some things that I found about E-TTL:
EOS-3 Technical Overview, p. 21:
"The system also prevents shooting errors that result from
overly-reflective objects in the scene."

The same is hinted at the EOS-1V prochure: (translated from Finnish) "The
exposure is correct even when there is unusually strong reflective area
outside focus and metering zone." (The translation is poor, but I tried to
maintain the exact wording... maybe somebody can check it from the English
edition.)

The EOS-3 Technical Overview also tells something about the evaluative
metering... under a lagre title of: "A Metering System That Considers Your
Composition. EOS-3's Evaluative Metering is built on a vast database of
knowledge from professional photographers." - which doesn't really say how
the metering works, except that it's based on large database. But later in
the text they write: "The camera automatically corrects exposure to
achieve the optimum setting by processing comparative data on readings
taken for the primary, secondary and peripheral metering zones." So it
seems that it is not just center weighted-like metering that is weighted
on the active AF point.

Best regards,
        Hugo.
