Oh yes. I think you can't use flash meter very successfully with
Canon wireless system, even in manual mode, because the flash meter
will measure the preflash (from flash or ST-E2) which triggers
the Canon slaves. But I haven't tried ST-E2 and it might be that
with high manual power settings you could get good (enough)
results.

If you forget the ST-E2 and use cable to the 550EX and use
simple optical slaves then it should work fine and still be
quite flexible.

Without trying myself yet, with ST-E2 I would use E-TTL only
(with the possible exception I mentioned above).

FYI: I use slide film all the time.
