And the interesting part was that ST-E2 triggers the flashes
even if it is OFF-camera.

Two questions:

1) I assume the ST-E2 alone (flashes off) will trigger the flash
meter even if it uses near-IR light, right?
Have you measured how much lower the output from ST-E2 alone
is if you compare that to the 550EX full power?

2) If you set an ON-camera 550EX in SLAVE mode and let the
camera exposure meter go off (6 second timeout) will the
ST-E2 trigger it (hand-held)?
