All auto flash units, from the newest 550EX to the original Vivitar 283 use
flash duration to control quantity when in any auto mode. Studio flash
units produce the same quantity of illumination, flash after flash (as long
as you don't alter the power setting).

I use my Minolta Auto Meter IIIF and Auto Meter IV with both my studio
strobes and auto speedlites all the time. The only issue with the
speedlites is that when they're set to auto or TTL the output varies
depending on whether you're standing in front of them or sticking your arm
into the scene to take a reading, etc.
