Good trick but unfortunately doesn't (always) work if you have
more than one (E-TTL) flash. I have made some tests with flash
in M-mode and master switch at 'master' and 'off'. It seems that
to trigger the slave flash(es) a preflash of about 1/64 power
is used (because when I used a single flash at 1/64 power
and master switch at 'master' the flash meter showed 1 stop
more light than with master switch at 'off'). Right?
At manual output powers of 1/8 or higher the effect of the
preflash was not significant (maybe 1/3 stop at 1/8 power).

On the other hand, why would you use E-TTL and flash meter
at the same time?

If you need speed and flexibility (e.g. moving object) then forget
the flash meter and use (E-)TTL.

If you use flash meter then your flash can be in manual mode
and you are in full control.

My opinion is that flash meter and Canon wireless flash system
with more than one flash are useless together (especially at
low output power levels).
