I tried a friend's 15-30 last week and it looked quite good although it
was Minolta mount so I couldn't try it on my EOS. He is very
enthusiastic about it but I read many comments on the 'net that it's
quite soft at the edges.
Then I went to see in Photodo and the best sigma wide in numbers is 24mm
(rating 4) but it's not that wide. Then there's the 20f/1.8 DG EX and
the 17-35.

The new DG lenses are specifically designed for use with digital SLRs. Since
the image area is smaller with digital than with film, the lens design
concentrates on making the central part of the optic sharp at the expense of
soft edges. However, the soft edges would be seen far more with a film
camera. If you are using a film camera, I would receommend the 17-35 F2.8-4.
If you using a digital D30 or D60 then the 15-30mm would be better. Just
bear in mind that when Canon finally has a digital EOS that uses a sensor
the same size as a 35mm frame, it will see the soft edges of the 15-30mm
just like a film camera. Hope this makes sense.
