Hi Steve,
I've owned both lenses for a couple of years now and they are both great. I
shoot a lot for motoring mags and the 28-70 gets used a lot for these
articles, mainly due to the faster AF and potential for slightly sharper
slides for critical colour reproduction work. Other than this, I use the
28-135 as a general purpose lens because of it's better focal range and
light weight. I have used it for magazine reproduction occassionally work
without any problem.

The 28-135 is my pick as the best value for money Canon lens and my choice
if I could only take a single lens. I bought it as part of my working kit
when I changed to Canon and couldn't get the 28-70 in time for a job. I
liked it so much I ended up keeping it as a backup. I recommend it for your
application - more so than the 28-70L. Optically very good with excellent
contrast and colour rendition.
