Hi Gerard I have the 20/1.8 EX DG and as you might know I use it on film cameras. Haven't shot very much with it yet though. I made some test shots before buying it (second hand for 350Euro) and noticed it is very soft at f1.8 in corners but ok in the center, but at f5.6 where I mostly use it it seems to be so good I don't notice any problems. It also has severe light fall-off in corners at wide apertures but it seems not to be worse than e.g. Canon 24/1.4L in that sense. Haven't really checked distortion. Somehow I feel at f2.8 it is no worse than any 20/2.8 but without comparison I can't tell if it is any better either. Mechanically it is better than the other Sigma (28-70/2.8 EX) I have. The dual focus mechanism is a bit confusing. There are two switches, the normal MF/AF switch and another one which you use by sliding the focusing ring forward and backwards. In order to change from AF to MF you need to move both switches. The only advantage is that after focusing manually you can lock the MF by sliding the focusing ring to AF position (where the ring turns free). MF works very smoothly. Uses 82mm filters. One thing I don't like in the older Sigma lenses (e.g. the 17-35) is that during AF the focusing ring turns. I quess you could testshoot this lens in a shop? If not I might help you (if you have one or two weeks time to wait). In that case contact me this week, before I leave on my vacation.
