Don't be concerned about the EOS flash system Alex, it really is very good.
I have the 550 and 420EX flash units and they both perform well. You will
get comfortable with the 550 after a short time using it. I use a Stofen
omnibounce on both flashes for all portrait/closeup work and only remove
them when shooting longer distances. Very useful for softening the flash
slightly. I also use -0.3 flash comp generally for most close to
mid-distance portraits.

I have the 16-35, 28-70, 70-200IS and 300/2.8IS L lenses, as well as the
28-135IS which I like. I mainly shoot with the 1v but also have a 3 as a
second body. I'm on the list for the new 1Ds when it arrives as well.
Another really good lens is the 70-200/4L which I had up until recently. I
probably should have kept it but needed the cash at the time.

Let me know if I can help with anything.

Regards, Tim
