All this talk of sharpness has tempted to me to ask a question which is
barely EOS related.

I have the EOS 300D, which has no mirror lock up (without resorting to
hacked russian source code). My longest lens is the 100-400L. If I
take a picture through the lens on my tripod at a slow shutter speed
(with IS off) it always comes out blurry. I tried using a bulb so I
wouldn't touch the camera, but it barely helps. I'm guessing my mirror
slap is making the whole thing move. Either that, or the wind is doing
it.

I have multiple options. I could buy a 10D, but I don't see the need
for it; I already have a 300D and for the most part it does everything
I want. If I buy a new body it will be a digital version of the EOS 3
(which I hope to be able to afford in March) and not another 1.6
cropping sensor. I could install the Russian firmware to get access to
the mirror lock up, but that might void my warranty, and I think my
warranty is important (already used it once when my mirror broke).

Lastly, it could be a tripod problem. This is where I'm currently
leaning unless someone has better advice. I have the Calumet branded
medium and small tripods. The medium hasn't really worked out for me (I
returned the first one because it was so badly assembled, and I'm also
having trouble with the second one), but the small was well worth the
price. Neither, however, really seem up to the job of holding a
gigantic white lens steady. This isn't suprising for the small, really,
but the head on the medium never seems to lock down solid. It always
wiggles. Does anyone have any reccomendations of what I should buy to
fix my problem? Would a better head for the medium tripod I already
have make a difference, or should I bite the bullet and shell out wads
of cash for a new head and legs of far superior quality?
