Are you using  a tripod colar ? Or are you mounting the camera body on the
tripod ?
What focal length are you talking about and at what shutter speed ?

I don't know what you mean by 'small' or 'medium'. Small doesnt sound
adequate anyway.  Have a look at the specs of the tripod and head and see
their maximum supporting weight. Use the lens tripod colar. It sounds like
you need a better tripod head.
