Four types of solvent can remove almost anything you might want to handle:
Water
Paint thinner
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Acetone
Each dissolves different things; they're not interchangeable.
It's always a good idea to try the solvent on an inconspicuous area
first, but none of the above should harm the enamel on a lens.
None leave a residue on their own. WD-40 or similar products have a
solvent component, but that component is also designed as a carrier
for another product, namely oil, that will leave a residue. Sometimes
that's desirable, but usually not.
