I disagree on the point about market share. Market Share proves little or
nothing about which product is technically superior. Momentum, marketing,
finance, and many other factors weight in.

Can we also then say that;
* Are Ford & GM really better than the competitors that they absorbed?
* Are the higher volume GM cars better than lower volume Lexus & BMW's?
* If the Lockheed L1011 was really the better plane, it would have outsold the
DC-10?
* If the Ercoupe were really a better plane it would have survived the aviation
bust, and it would be resurrected for the * Sport Pilot / LSA rather than the
Luscombe, therefore the Luscumbe is better?

I almost hesitate to jump into this one, but, IMHO, Hartmut is right on.

I have 30+ years in HW/SW/Telecom and the bottom line is that computer
professionals are not (really) masochists.

If the Apple/MAC was better than the PC then the PC would not have 94+
percent of the market.

When I read this: "But he reports freezes and hangups just like every other
OS Microsoft ever produced", I wonder what the people are doing with their
computers?
I had the joy to evaluate the computer situation last summer because my wife
was due for an upgrade and I needed a new workhorse.
I used to be a Mac guy in the nineties, but learned to see the advantages of
the windows machines.
They were cheaper, more compatible and compared to Macs much more reliable.
With the move of Macintosh inc. to base their computers on a Unix variant,
they created a stable system finally, but many good things from the old world
did not make it over to the new Mac.
However many of my friends are sold on the Macintosh Emporium and every time
I am getting an E-mail from them with an attachment, I have problems opening
it. To be compatible with the rest of the world, you need to buy a higher
priced, less featured version of Office for the Mac. I realized, if I follow
that road, I am paying twice for a less usable system.
My friends are telling me that the new Macs also run Windows natively, thanks
to the Intel chip found in the newer Macs.
Now I figured, if I really want to run Windows in the first place, why bother
spending twice for a machine to run that on?

So I bought a Mini-PC for my wife and put windows server 2003 on it. Turned
on the machine, installed all the programs my wife needed, and gave it to her.
She leaves the machine running since the mini-PC makes no noise at all. The
machine runs since last summer !
It is in daily use. My wife does E-mail, word processing with it and edits
her music that she burns on CDs. Many CDs.

She could have done the same with a Mac twice that expensive, but I would
have to buy extra software to avoid her getting stuck with the very basic
applications the Mac comes with.

And this is actually the main feature that let's me stick with windows. There
are way more applications written for windows.
And most applications for aviation too.

I have nothing against other systems, I have two Linux systems running at
home too, and two older Macs, but I am doing the most with my Windows system.
I got me a AmiloPro Fujitsu Siemens that beats any Mac Laptop in features and
costs only half that much. And since the hardware that PC is using, is almost
the same as the MacBooks, I am able to run OSX on it too, just for the fun of
it. And yes I ordered Vista also.

What I am trying to say is that every system has its user base. It depends on
what you would like to do with your computer.
And before you buy a Mac or plan to install Unix, make sure hat your beloved
apps are also running on that.
Macs look good and are good for your ego. Agreed.

  Hartmut

?My next PC will be a Mac.

    Dan?

So will mine. I?m in the market for a laptop and it will not be a PC. I?m
just waiting for Apple?s latest OS to come out and see what they do with their
laptops?they?re due for some changes.

The original email about Vista is full of bogosity, but the reality may be
worse. A friend bought a new PC with Vista already loaded, took about ½ hour
to plug everything in and get running. But he reports freezes and hangups just
like every other OS Microsoft ever produced. Also the constant nagging and
confirming of almost anything you do is crazy.

We used Sun Solaris, a Unix variant, for years at work. Extremely stable
and a pleasure to use, but ?reality? interfered and over time we switched to
Windows. Our production declined and has never been the same.

Some say that MS has to run on flakey hardware which Apple doesn?t have to
deal with (because Apple controls the hw also). What about Linux? It runs on
the same flakey hw and I don?t hear stories about Blue Screens, freezes, weird
behavior after a few days of running.

Vista may be the last straw for a lot of people. The Mac ads on TV are
hilarious and convey a lot of truth.

My next PC will be a Mac.

The following is from a computer-literate friend. I cannot vouch for
it's accuracy, but it appears correct to me. Don

              Hi everyone

Ok, here is the vista update as many of you are writing to me
with suggestions...
              1) as of January 30th all computers with XP were ordered back to
manfg to get Vista on them
              2) I took my vista computer back to Walmart as did many other
customers, we were told that
Since the machine was basically working they would not take
them back and they had no
More computers with XP on them
              3) called emachine and they are not allowed to sell or put XP on
anymore machines after Jan 30th
              4) even though Microsoft says a minimum of 1GB RAM, eMachine
(Gateway) can sell the computer
With 512MB because the vista version on the computer is an
abbrviated version called BASIC and I would have
To pay $239.00 more for the PREMIUM VERSION or $399.00 more
for the ULTIMATE VERSION.
              5) print drivers will only be upgrade by each printer mfg going
back 18 months so if your printer is
Older than that, you will have to purchase a new printer to
work on Vista.
              6) digital camera users will have to go thru the same thing
waiting for new drivers to become available
From your camera mfg.. And depending on the camera, mine is
two years old and will not get new
Drivers so I will have to replace my camera
              7) getting thru to any of the tech supports for any computer
related product is almost impossible I am
So frustrated about holding two and 1/2 hours only to get
hung up on....

And lastly, if your new computer comes with vista you cannot
format it and use a copy of XP
Because all the chips and video cards, sound cards etc will only
work with Vista installed so that
Is definetly not an option... So I guess we all have to dig
deep in our pockets this next year to
Upgrade everything we own to Vistas specifications... Thankyou
very much bill gates, your jerk

PLEASE EMAIL THIS TO ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO IS EVEN THINKING ABOUT
BUYING A
NEW COMPUTER... THE PUBLIC SHOULD KNOW THIS INFO BEFORE
PURCHASING PRODUCTS
THAT WILL CONTROL THEM AS VISTA IS DOING... THIS IS INSANITY THAT
THE COMPANIES
CAN HAVE THIS MUCH CONTROL OVER US.
