Hey Dave: I believe that most of the problem lies within the FAA
registration branch. They do not always change the registration even though the
 legal
paperwork has been submitted. For example, I converted a C model to a D model
in 1999 and submitted the completed paperwork. I got back a registration for a
C model. I went to my local FAA office, and had them send in the paperwork.
YUP, what I got back was registration for a C model.
I have other examples, but it does no good to rag on about it here. They
seem to do what they want to do, and it does not matter who sends in the
paperwork.
OBTW I agree with John that it is not always possible to tell if the
airframe has been converted. If no log book entry was made, or no 337
submitted,
you are out of luck. However, if that is the case, the 415-C would then
(paper work wise) be a legal sport pilot airplane. I would be willing to bet
that
all of our Coupes have been flown over their legal gross weight limit. And I
also think that the gross weight limit for sport pilot will not change.
There is too much money involved.
Lynn
