If my perception's of the process is correct, the FAA registrations are
separate from the FAA certifications. That's why you get two sets of
data back from the FAA when you ask for a CD copy of the paperwork.

You shouldn't rely on the "registration" to determine if a 'coupe is
LSA. The FAA registration folks don't seem to be in direct contact with
the airworthy certification folks. So they will usually just copy
whatever the last registration says, or worse, whatever the submitter
wrote down as the make/model.

This is my belief as to why you'll do lookups in the FAA registration
website and find our birds listed under makers "Univair", "ERCO",
"Engineering and Research", "Ercoupe", "Aircoupe", "Forney", "Mooney",
and another dozen other variations... some are correct, but some are
outright wrong (ex: "Ercoupe"... that is the craft name, not maker!).

Now go over and look at the airworthy certificates part of the FAA
website... they only list "ERCO", "Forney", "Alon", "Mooney", etc...
this is correct. They are concerned with EXACTLY who made what and what
models they made.

So where am I going with all this? Look at the paperwork sent to the
FAA involving airworthiness... your STCs, 337s... etc... If any say
anything about modifying in accordance with requirements to make it a
model D... THEN IT IS. The A&P signed it, the IA signed it, and FSDO
signed it. It is done. Now what the folks in registration say doesn't
matter. They don't look into model changes like that (after all, VERY
few planes can actually have a model number changed!). Just to be funny
now (but to prove a point), you could probably get them to issue you a
registration saying "Model 707-400", but that doesn't mean you can
legally fly with a full compliment of flight attendants. Now try to get
a 337 to say you have a "Model 747-400"... I bet it won't make it past
anyone.
