John is right. I own a factory converted CD Model that was born as a C. As a CD, all it needs to be A 415-D model is to restrict the elevator to 9 degrees up. That's it. Just a readjustment of the elevator stop. I think this was the initial thought when Erco introduced the CD. For those that wish higher gross weight, a simple change of the elevator stop would do it. But the regulations developed otherwise over the years and one would have to get an approval to do so and file a paper heap and then you are busted when the regulations change later in favoring of a lesser gross weight. I wish the sport Pilot regulations would have been more flexible in the way that it would include certain type of planes, when flown in a specified condition . In our case the gross weight. Then all 415 type Ercoupes could be flown as Sport Pilot and one could even fly the safer later style 415-E,G and even the early Forneys as such. The latter would need an amendment to the Existing TC, something that only Univair could initiate. Well, that will never happen. So if you need it totally legal for the Sport Pilot - I guess it will be hard to find a clean 415-C. Many previous owners wanted more gross weight, more power and that led to alterations. They are all filed one way or the other. So getting the FAA records before buying is a must. All of those parts are used on the "CD", which is LSA eligible. Used car dealers and lawyers are nothing compared to some of our fellow aviators. Be sure and order the aircraft records from the FAA for any aircraft that you are thinking of buying. I've searching for an LSA 'coupe for some months and recently found what looked like a nice one. The owner assured me that it was a C model and even had a bill of sale that showed it as a C. However, when I got the 337s from the FAA, it showed that it had been converted to a D 5 years ago. When I notified the owner, he was very upset. He indicated that he had been "lied to" by the person who sold him the airplane. In the course of our conversation, he explained that what he meant was that the seller had indicated that he had made the conversion but had not and would not file the 337! The FAA records turned out to be the best $10 I have spent lately. Be careful when you buy!
