What's really funny is that everyone did this for the legal weight increase.
It always cracks me up when you buy or file a piece of paper and think the
airplane is now stronger. Looks like it's biting a lot of people in the tail
cone now!

And the word is that the conversion needs to be filed for it to be legally a D
model. Part of the process is the filing of the paperwork, without it the
procedure isn't complete. If your FAA records don't indicate the change, it
never happened.

There is an interesting legal problem that David's email raises, and that
concerns whether an airplane converted to D specs, but not having the 337 ever
filed with the FAA can still be operated under the sport pilot rules.

Without researching the question, my gut reaction is that they cannot.

If the log book entries have been made showing the conversion, or if the
additional parts have been installed, the airplane is likely forever precluded
from being a sport pilot airplane.

Even more reason to get a thorough inspection done by a mechanic who knows
Coupes, and for a complete review of logs and the FAA CD. The old trick of
"losing" the log books won't work either, if the airplane has been physically
converted, any knowledgeable person can tell.

All

I get a strong impression that we have MANY coupes that are physically
converted to "D" class specs, and are recorded as being so, but are NOT
actually registered as "D" models. They are still, officially, "C" models.
These conversions were made some years ago.

I do not understand why so many birds have been made physically capable of
carrying an increased load without the final bit of paperwork being
accomplished to make it legal.

There must be SOME reason for this, and I suspect that it could lead to
useful background info.

    Anybody have a clue?

OH BY THE WAY, I got my bird moved on a house-moving truck. Worked great.
Thanks for all the helpful advice.

----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any
advice in this forum.]---- I know that the seasoned "old hands" will find this
somewhat obvious, but I would like to pass on to the less sophisticated members
of the list (like me) a cautionary note. Be sure and order the aircraft
records from the FAA for any aircraft that you are thinking of buying. I've
searching for an LSA 'coupe for some months and recently found what looked like
a nice one. The owner assured me that it was a C model and even had a bill of
sale that showed it as a C. However, when I got the 337s from the FAA, it
showed that it had been converted to a D 5 years ago. When I notified the
owner, he was very upset. He indicated that he had been "lied to" by the
person who sold him the airplane. In the course of our conversation, he
explained that what he meant was that the seller had indicated that he had made
the conversion but had not and would not file the 337! The FAA records turned
out to be the best $10 I have spent lately. Be careful when you buy!
