OpenType supports in freetype is early and I don't think it will work
through our backend automagically. Not even by cairo backend if you
wish. The backend and gui needs to deal
with informations in opentype tables and they (freetype) didn't
support every table yet.
(we didn't support it at all, AFAIK) Our current text system still
didn't follow some rules due
to performance problems. But it is still very good (ie. Pango is not
better) and can be improved.
We need more engineer on text system.
Note: I didn't check things for months so I'm probably be out-of-date,
hopefully not too much.
Looking at the FreeType 2 features, there isn't anything saying that
OpenType support is lacking... they seem to be presenting it as a
first class citizen along with TrueType.
