Unless I'm mistaken, Freetype can uses OpenType fonts, no ? And we use freetype.

Yes, but it's not really converted -- ie the font itself is left untouched, it's simply that all the fonts of a police are gathered in a common bundle, and there's a file describing the fonts. mknfonts genererate all that automatically.
