And some of the classic open source fonts are here:

Maybe we should bundle some ?

Yeah -- I found that link too.

Really nice fonts unlike most usual free fonts.

I sent an email off to the guy who made Lacuna to see if he'd be okay with modifying his license so that I could alter it for use as the base system font. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

It cannot be worse than the current ones (Helvetica or Vera Sans often) ;-)… but we would need to check the readability with a screenshot of the environment using this font.

And definitely, we should bundle some of them. At the very least, let's include these:

 - Gentium
 - Bitstream Vera
 - Andika

I would also suggest we include:

 - DejaVu
 - Doulos
 - Charis

And some of the non-Latin fonts, like:

 - Scheherezade
 - Lateef
 - Ezra
 - ShanHeiSun
 - ZenKai
 - Bitstream Cyberbit

And anything else you suggest or that anyone in the project would find useful...

Most of the other fonts (particularly ones from the last link Yen- Ju sent) have restrictive licenses (fonts can't be modified, fonts can't be used in commercial works, fonts can't be redistributed, etc). I'd prefer we stay away from those.

I'm unable to find the license for most of the fonts from this last link (the one Yen-Ju sent). In Gentium case, is the license part of the German text? Since you suggest Gentium, are the other fonts created by this designer "totally free" too? I really like most of them :-)

Also... can we work with OpenType fonts? Are there any technical issues there?

I don't think there isn't any support for OpenType font in GNUstep right now, but may be this can be implemented. iirc morevover we use a special font format based on a bundle, that means fonts have to be converted.

Cheers,
Quentin.
